Heavy-tailed, Non-gaussian Nature of Terrain and Its Implications for Terrain Modeling by L1 Splines

چکیده
This paper presents the first step in establishing a link between the heavy-tailed nature of terrain and a new terrain modeling technique, L1 splines, that is, splines based on minimizing the L1 norm rather than the square of the L2 norm. To establish this link, we focus on the heavy-tailed nature of the second derivatives that occur in the L1 spline minimization principles. For one urbanterrain data set (Baltimore, Maryland) and two naturalterrain data sets (Killeen, Texas), the second derivatives behave asymptotically like c|x−μ| for −α between –4 and −2 rather than like exponential functions. Similar results for first derivatives minus first differences are presented. The distributions investigated here are not directly related to the spatial frequency spectra that have been the topic of most previous investigations of the heavy-tailed nature of terrain. The heavy-tailed nature of the frequency spectra of terrain has not resulted in any major impact on modeling of large terrain datasets (although it has had significant positive impact on modeling of vehicle-terrain interaction, where the data sets are local and smaller). The investigation of the heavy-tailed nature of the derivatives of terrain will have significant impact by providing the theoretical underpinnings for the current observation that L1 splines provide better terrain modeling than alternative techniques.

Computationally Efficient Models of Urban and Natural Terrain by Non-iterative Domain Decomposition for L1 Smoothing Splines
In this paper, we propose and validate a computationally efficient non-iterative domain decomposition procedure for calculating bivariate cubic L1 smoothing splines. This domain decomposition procedure involves calculating local L1 smoothing splines individually on overlapping “extended subdomains” that cover the global domain and then creating the global L1 smoothing spline by patching togethe...
متن کاملPresenting a Morphological Based Approach for Filtering The Point Cloud to Extract the Digital Terrain Model
The Digital terrain model is an important geospatial product used as the basis of many practical projects related to geospatial information. Nowadays, a dense point cloud can be generated using the LiDAR data. Actually, the acquired point cloud of the LiDAR, presents a digital surface model that contains ground and non-ground objects. The purpose of this paper is to present a new approach of ex...
متن کاملEvaluation of Gaussian Processes for Large Scale Terrain Modeling
This paper addresses the problem of large scale terrain modeling for a mobile robot. Building a model of large scale terrain that can adequately handle uncertainty and incompleteness in a statistically sound way is a challenging problem. A recent work [Vasudevan et al., 2009] proposed non-stationary Gaussian processes (GP’s) based on the neural network kernel as a solution to the problem. GP’s ...

Terrain navigation has a lot ofdisadvantages and so researchers have been studied on different method of aided navigation for many years. Therefore, more types of aided navigation systems were introduced with advantages and disadvantages in terms of practical and theoretical. One of the main ideas for ...
متن کاملComparison in the Hausdorff Metric of Reconstruction of 3D Urban Terrain by Four Procedures
We computationally compare four procedures, namely, alpha-shapes, iso-surface extraction, gridfit and L1 splines for geometric reconstruction of 3D urban structures represented by irregular point clouds with abrupt changes in density. For significant numbers of outliers, L1 splines produce the most accurate reconstructions both visually and when measured analytically in the Hausdorff metric but...
